Wycombe’s Low ‘destined for better things’

Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield believes centre-back Joe Low is “destined to go on to better things” amid speculation about the Wales international’s future.

Swansea City are keen to sign Low in the January transfer window, but no deal has yet been agreed with the Chairboys.

The 22-year-old has scored four goals in 22 appearances this season to help Wycombe to second place in League One and in with a chance of reaching the Championship for only the second time.

“He’s a very good player and he’s our player. We think a lot of him. He’s worked incredibly hard,” Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio.

Low, who has two Welsh caps, joined Wycombe in July 2023 after leaving Bristol City.

“It was decided he wasn’t good enough for the Championship at that point but we believed in him, we’ve worked with him, we’ve nurtured him,” said Bloomfield.

Wycombe are at home to fourth-placed Huddersfield Town on Tuesday evening.

And they will be concerned about too many players leaving the squad as they look to keep pace with Birmingham City and Wrexham at the top, both clubs with larger budgets.

They have already lost Caleb Taylor and Aaron Morley, who were recalled from loan spells at Adams Park by parent clubs West Brom and Bolton respectively.

And forward Richard Kone is also believed to have attracted admirers from a higher level after scoring 16 goals already this season.

He was on target again in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Blackpool when they were denied victory by Kyle Joseph’s stoppage-time equaliser for the Seasiders.

Wycombe will be without Alex Hartridge for the Huddersfield game after he was sent off against Blackpool following a second yellow card.

“Al’s not played loads and loads of football so maybe it was just a timing error. I’m certainly not going to heap any blame on Al because he’s been a diamond of a boy since he’s come in and given us everything he’s got,” said Bloomfield.

“But it’s football – it’s not smooth, it’s not linear, you have to pick yourselves up from these moments and make sure you’re ready go go again.”
