Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund were forced to split the points on Saturday after a 1-1 draw.
Scorers: Stöger 71′ (P); Gitten 64′. Red: Čvančara 90+5′
It was a match with few chances at Borussia Park, but fans were treated to an entertaining second half between these two rivals.
Rocco Reitz and Kevin Stöger led the attack for the hosts, while Marcel Sabitzer and Jamie Gittens were the liveliest for the visitors. But with only one effort on target combined after 45 minutes, things remained deadlocked.
Dortmund’s in-form Gittens then found his touch late on for the opening goal. The 20-year-old Englishman picked up the ball on the left side of the box and dribbled past two defenders before roofing it off the crossbar and in.
Gladbach, however, then had a little luck go their way for the equaliser. Alassane Pléa flicked the ball toward the back post following a corner and Tim Kleindienst was brought down inside the box. A long VAR check then awarded a penalty, which Stöger converted.
Late drama saw the hosts hit the bar in the dying moments while the visitors were forced to substitute Niklas Süle due to injury. Tomáš Čvančara was shown a second yellow with two minutes remaining, but despite the man advantage the points were split.
Looking at the table, Dortmund sit fifth while Gladbach sit 11th.
