Milan made the trip to Monza on Saturday and returned to winning ways in Serie A after a 1-0 victory.
Scorer: Reijnders 43′
It was one-way traffic as the visitors ran the show at Stadio Brianteo, but it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for Milan against Monza.
Paulo Fonseca’s side led the game with 18 shots to 12 and 60% possession of the ball but failed to execute a real game plan. In truth, the one player who showed the most creativity on the pitch was Daniele Maldini against his former club and he even hit the post.
The eventual game-winner arrived thanks to a bit of luck. Christian Pulisic attempted to deliver a curling cross toward Alvaro Morata, who couldn’t score, but Tijjani Reijnders was lingering to head home. He now has scored in consecutive games in all competitions for the first time with Milan
Even the introduction of Rafael Leão, who was questionably left on the bench by Fonseca, couldn’t help the visitors muster up a second goal. Monza, meanwhile, didn’t have enough firepower of their own and Maldini ran out of fumes.
Heading into their next string of games, which includes a match against Real Madrid in the Champions League, Milan will want to get back to their most fluid football.
Still, the 1-0 win puts them in sight of the top six and two points away from the top four. Monza, meanwhile, remains in the relegation zone.
