Former Roma, Marseille and Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.

The Dutchman, who made 46 appearances for the national team, took to X to announce the decision three months after being released by Serie A side Genoa.

Most known for his time with Roma, who he played for on 131 occasions, he also represented PSV Eindhoven 88 times alongside stints at Sparta Rotterdam, Marseille and Genoa.

A career spanning almost 500 professional appearances saw him score 45 goals and grab 82 assists, while he was no stranger to a yellow card either, picking up an impressive 102 across his career.
