1 arrested after Lubbock hit-and-run crash that killed Randall High basketball standout

Police on Friday announced one person was arrested after a hit-and-run crash that left one person dead and another injured late Tuesday in east Lubbock.

According to Lubbock police, 43-year-old Julian Mercado was taken into custody by LPD investigators on Friday and is charged with a felony count of failure to stop and render aid causing death in connection with the crash that killed 18-year-old Zakeria Bol, a recent Randall High School basketball standout.

Mercado is accused of driving a vehicle that struck Bol and 18-year-old Benjamin Brown about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of Idalou Road.

When officers arrived to the scene of the crash, Brown was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center with moderate injuries, and Bol was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police by late Friday did not release additional details about the crash or what evidence linked Mercado to the hit-and-run.

Mercado’s bond has been set at $100,000.
