2005 NCAA champion UNC basketball team honored at UNC football season opener

Date:

How has it been 20 years already?!

During the UNC football program’s season opener on Saturday afternoon, the 2004-2005 UNC basketball team was honored at Kenan Stadium. The honoring was done as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of when this group cut the nets down and won the national championship.

It was certainly a nostalgic moment for fans of the UNC basketball program, given it feels like just yesterday that this group, led by legendary head coach Roy Williams, added another banner to the Dean Smith Center rafters. As part of the celebration this afternoon, the scoreboards at Kenan Stadium played a short tribute video (which can be viewed below).

Many of us can remember the special moments that occurred during that incredible season, one that we all still love to talk about today. The team was absolutely LOADED, giving opposing teams matchup nightmares that were nearly impossible to stop.

That team won so much that it was shocking when they lost (which they didn’t do much that season!).

The University of North Carolina always does a tremendous job of recognizing the greatness of their respective sports teams. This is yet another example of that with the university reuniting one of the best teams in UNC basketball history together for a special celebration.
