2024 Yashin Trophy nominees – ranked

The 2024 Yashin Trophy nominees have been announced, with the winner of the coveted award set to be announced on October 28.

First awarded back in 2019, the Yashin Trophy is given to the most outstanding goalkeeper of the season and named after arguably the most outstanding goalkeeper of all time – Lev Yashin.

This year, 10 shot-stoppers have earned a nomination.

And, of course, we’ve decided to rank them.

For his performance in South Africa‘s AFCON quarter-final win over Cape Verde alone, Ronwen Williams was a deserved nominee for the Yashin Trophy.

The goalkeeper remarkably saved four penalties in a shoot-out victory which earned Bafana Bafana safe passage to the semi-finals for the first time in over 20 years.

If you watched Gianluigi Donnarumma at Euro 2024, you’ll be surprised that he’s only ninth in our rankings.

If you watched Gianluigi Donnarumma play for PSG over the last 12 months, you’ll be surprised that he was nominated at all.

Yes, we’re as shocked as you are that Diogo Costa didn’t get a mega-money move to one of Europe’s top clubs during the summer – especially after his showing at Euro 2024.

For both club and country, the 24-year-old is one of the most consistent goalkeepers around.

In terms of pure talent between the sticks, Mike Maignan is probably the best goalkeeper on this list.

The reason he’s only seventh in our rankings is the lack of honours won with AC Milan and France in 2023/24. His club and his country didn’t exactly pull up trees last season, with the latter underperforming at Euro 2024.

Andriy Lunin perhaps felt a little hard done by when he was dropped for the UEFA Champions League final having played so well for Real Madrid on their route to Wembley Stadium.

Despite that hardship, Lunin has at least earned himself a Yashin Trophy nomination – and a deserved one at that.

The Ukraine international didn’t put a foot wrong when deputising for Thibaut Courtois in 2023/24, helping Madrid to a famous double.

Signed as a replacement for Andre Onana, Yann Sommer turned out to be an upgrade in between the sticks for Inter.

The Swiss veteran was exceptional throughout Inter’s dominant 2023/24 Serie A campaign, conceding 20 fewer goals than any other starting goalkeeper in the division. Impressive stuff.

Yep, another Swiss goalkeeper.

This one helped his team, Borussia Dortmund, to surprisingly make it to the UEFA Champions League final in London during the 2023/24 season.

Kobel came up big time and time again during that remarkable run.

Thanks to his exploits at Euro 2024, Giorgi Mamardashvili is even more famous than 90min’s Jacob Culshaw in Georgia – which is really saying something.

The goalkeeper was sublime in Germany, earning a move to Premier League giants Liverpool off the back of those performances.

A Euro 2024 winner, Unai Simon will no doubt receive a fair few votes for this award.

The goalkeeper was fantastic throughout the tournament as well as in La Liga, where he won the Zamora Trophy for his performances.

Emi Martinez could be set to become the first ever two-time winner of the Yashin Trophy.

It’d be hard to argue with him winning it either.

The goalkeeper was fantastic for Aston Villa as they qualified for the UEFA Champions League, and he was arguably Argentina‘s star man as they won the 2024 Copa America too.
