39-point outings headline Muskegon-area basketball roundup for Dec. 20

MUSKEGON, MI – The last full Friday night slate of basketball for the 2024 calendar year proved to be a memorable one for a pair of playmakers from the Muskegon area.

North Muskegon junior guard Adam Dugener and Muskegon Catholic Central senior Bradley Richards each lit up the scoreboard like a Christmas tree, as they each scored 39 points to lead their respective squads to momentum-building wins before the holiday break.

Dugener finished with 39 points, four steals and three assists in his team’s 72-32 rout of Hart in West Michigan Conference action. He was joined by Landen Grimm and Braylen Burrell, who each scored nine points and David Markiewicz, who had six points.

TJ Byard added four points, four rebounds, six steals, four assists and two blocks, while Chuck Meyers had three assists and four rebounds and Jaden Villalpando had five rebounds.

Brendan Hiddema finished with nine points to lead Hart, while Caleb Ackley and Caden Bond each added six points.

North Muskegon (6-0) will host Montague (1-6) on Jan. 3, while Hart (5-2) will travel to Mason County Central (3-4) on Jan. 2.

Richards finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds in his team’s 75-65 win over Grand Rapids Wellspring Prep. He was joined by Bryan Convertini, who recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Will Fedewa, who had five assists and four steals.

Muskegon Catholic Central (3-2) will travel to the inaugural Holton Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.

Below is a recap of how all the Muskegon-area boys and girls basketball performed on Friday, Dec. 20, 2024.

BOYS

Grand Haven 50, Spring Lake 49

The annual Drawbridge Classic between the Buccaneers and Lakers lived up to the hype Friday as Grand Haven used a pair of clutch free throws from Kaden Strong with three seconds remaining in regulation to lift his team to a one-point home win.

Spring Lake jumped out to a 12-point lead early in the contest but Grand Haven rallied to cut the deficit to two points at halftime. The Buccaneers established a five-point lead in the fourth quarter but the Lakers stormed back to take a 49-48 lead in the closing minute of play before Strong’s game-winning free throws.

Will Plummer scored 19 points to lead Grand Haven, while Strong added nine points and Alex Dixon had eight points.

Jaden Core led Spring Lake with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Reid Grimmer added 10 points and three blocks, Maddux Kipling had nine points and seven rebounds and Max Feltner scored eight points.

Grand Haven (4-1) will host Holland (4-2) on Dec. 27 at 4:30 p.m. for the opening round of the Lake Michigan Cup at Grand Haven High School. The Buccaneers will also face Holland Christian (4-1) on Dec. 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Spring Lake (3-3) will also compete in the Lake Michigan Cup, as they take on Ludington (4-2) on Dec. 27 at 4 p.m. and Petoskey (5-1) on Dec. 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Grand Blanc 78, Whitehall 67

Cam Thompson finished with 30 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals to lead the Vikings, while Kal Koehler added 24 points and five rebounds and Finn Muller had nine points and three assists.

Whitehall (4-2) will take on Forest Hills Central (5-1) on Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Cornerstone University Holiday Classic, followed by another non-conference clash with Coopersville (3-3) on Dec. 27 at Muskegon High School for the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Classic.

Newaygo 58, Howard City Tri-County 51

Isaiah Miedema and Ethan Reyburn each scored 12 points to lead Newaygo, while Blake Kerr added 11 points and Blake Sanborn scored eight points.

Newaygo (4-3) will be back in action on Jan. 7 as they host Montague (1-6).

Wyoming 81, Orchard View 31

Yaseen Davis scored eight points to lead the Cardinals, who fall to 1-6 overall on the season. Orchard View will face Wyoming Lee on Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. for the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Classic at Muskegon High School.

Reeths-Puffer 60, Sparta 59

The Rockets picked up their first win of the JR Wallace era, as the first-year head coach celebrated a 1-point victory with his squad following a dramatic chain of events in the fourth quarter Friday night.

Reeths-Puffer held a 46-38 lead entering the final quarter of play but saw their advantage shrink to just 46-45 with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The Rockets used a few key defensive stops and some clutch free throws from Brayden Mitchelson to help fend off the Spartans and secure the win.

Mitchelson led Reeths-Puffer with 18 points, while Marvin Moore added 14 points and Elliot Schneider had 10 points.

Reeths-Puffer (1-4) will host Caledonia (3-3) on Jan. 3.

Fremont 71, Montague 40

Redick Powell finished with 27 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Noah Hansen added 11 points and three rebounds and Mossen Green had eight points, six rebounds and three steals. Brayden Crosley added five points, four assists, and three steals, Carter Sherman had six points and seven rebounds and Logan McLain had five rebounds and four blocks.

Fremont (2-5) will host Orchard View (1-6) on Jan. 2, while Montague (1-6) will travel to North Muskegon (6-0) on Jan. 3.

Mason County Central 64, Ravenna 50

Cole VanderHaag finished with 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists to lead Spartans, while Trent Hawke added 19 points, six rebounds and two assists, Jaxon Munoz had six points, four steals, and three rebounds and Tyler Norton had six points and three rebounds.

“Our guys came out hungry tonight,” said Mason County Central head coach Chris VanderHaag. “With a couple of tough losses by two points that last two games, I knew we were not going to let this one get away. Our super sophomore Trent Hawk showed us who he is tonight. The kid really works hard on his game. Tonight he hit three 3-pointers and some big shots in the paint too.

“Tyler Norton had another huge fourth quarter for us. He hit a big-time 3-pointer to give us a big spark. Cole VanderHaag was big tonight too. The Ravenna guards had trouble slowing him down. He did what we needed him to do. We continue to get better every game.”

Mason County Central (3-4) will host Reed City (1-4) on Dec. 30, while Ravenna (3-5) will host Hesperia (2-4) on Jan. 2.

Shelby 61, Hesperia 38

Griffin Olmstead and Trevor Weiss each scored 12 points to lead Shelby, while Leighton Belasco added 11 points and Evan Waller had 10 points.

Ian Fox finished with 12 points to lead Hesperia, while Ethan O’Neil added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Shelby (1-5) will travel to Manistee (1-6) on Saturday, while Hesperia (2-4) will travel to Ravenna (3-5) on Jan. 2.

Kent City 79, Central Montcalm 73 (OT)

Aaron Vanderwest finished with 16 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals, while Isaiah Stuhan added 16 points and Mason Paterson had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Tanner Carlson recorded 11 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Justin Anderson had eight points and four rebounds and Andre Meade had eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Kent City (3-3) will take on Greenville (6-0) on Jan. 2 at the Cornerstone University Holiday Classic.

Lakeview 41, White Cloud 38

Jayden Robinson finished with 16 points to lead White Cloud, while Coleson Cruzan added 10 points, Brady Strait had six points and David Higgs had five points.

White Cloud (4-2) will travel to the inaugural Holton Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.

GIRLS

Grand Haven 62, Spring Lake 30

The Buccaneers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised past the Lakers for an impressive non-conference home win Friday night.

Abby Sponaas led the Buccaneers with 13 points and six rebounds, while Gillian Sorrelle added 10 points and four steals and Mallory Woiteshek had 10 points and four assists.

Grand Haven (6-0) will travel to Rockford (4-1) on Jan. 3, while Spring Lake (3-2) will travel to Holland (2-4) on Jan. 3.

Mona Shores 43, Hopkins 37

Laynie Russell finished with 11 points to lead the Sailors, while Logan Clausen added 10 points, Katie Phillips had nine points and Lainee Carmean had five points.

Reegan Helderop scored a game-high 20 points to lead Hopkins.

Mona Shores (4-2) will take on Zeeland West on Dec. 27 at the Cornerstone Holiday Showcase.

Oakridge 48, Orchard View 34

Cambria Guenthardt scored 21 points to lead the Eagles, while Adrianna Raap added 10 points, and Destiny Bowen and Hadley Whitaker each had six points.

Oakridge (2-5) will host Whitehall (2-3) on Jan. 3, while Orchard View (0-6) will head to Kalamazoo Phoenix (3-1) on Dec. 27.

Reeths-Puffer 58, Kentwood Grand River Prep 20

Raquel Walker finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists to lead the Rockets, while Trinity Moore added 10 points and five rebounds and Ashlyn David had 10 points.

Reeths-Puffer (2-6) will host Caledonia (4-2) on Jan. 3.

Fremont 68, Montague 23

Riley Chase finished with a career-high 22 points and seven steals to lead the Packers, while Taylor DeKuiper added a career-high 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals, Taylor Johnson also added a career-high with 12 points, and Mia Clemence registered seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Addison Pranger finished with 10 points to lead Montague, while Addie Peterson added five points.

Fremont (4-1) will host Mason County Central (3-2) on Dec. 30, while Montague (4-1) will travel to North Muskegon (3-2) on Jan. 3.

Kent City 32, Central Montcalm 27

Hailey Kamphuis finished with nine points and two assists to lead the Eagles, while Alyssa Miller added five points, four rebounds and three steals and Ellie Hansen had five points.

Kent City (5-1) will take on Greenville (4-1) on Jan. 3 at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament.

Lakeview 38, White Cloud 28

Payten Bird finished with eight points to lead White Cloud, while Brooklyn Foondle added seven points.

White Cloud (1-4) will travel to the inaugural Holton Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.

Newaygo 54, Howard City Tri-County 18

Gabby Arney finished with 15 points, seven steals and five rebounds to lead Newaygo, while Kija Schultz added 11 points, four steals and four rebounds and Lilly Holmes had nine points and 11 rebounds.

points“It was a good win for the girls going into Christmas break,” said Newaygo head coach Nate Thomasma. “I didn’t like the way we started the game but the girls picked up the intensity and things got better. (Tri-County) was short-handed and down two starters and they played hard throughout the game. We need to continue to tighten things up over the break and try to stay sharp. We don’t have another game for three weeks.”

Newaygo (6-1) will travel to Big Rapids (5-1) on Jan. 10.

Ravenna 33, Mason County Central 21

Ravenna (5-1) will travel to Hesperia (0-4) on Jan. 3, while Mason County Central (3-2) will travel to Fremont (4-1) on Dec. 30.

Cedar Springs 61, Grant 49
