Sunday’s game was up for grabs in the final two minutes. Georgia (6-1) made the plays it had to have to leave The Bahamas with a win.
Silas Demary Jr. hit a layup to push Georgia ahead by one with just under two minutes to go, and Tyrin Lawrence brought down a key defensive rebound to end the St. John’s threat. Demary missed a shot on the ensuing possession that was then rebounded by Dylan James, who got the rebound, put it back, and hit the and-one to create a 61-57 contest with 1:03 to go.
Kadary Richmond hit the front end of two free throws, after which Demary grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Demary’s first free throw created a four-point game with just under 57 seconds to go, and a putback by the Red Storm left Georgia’s lead at 62-60 with 41 seconds to go. The two teams traded turnovers before Demary returned to the line and hit both shots to create a four-point game with 23 ticks remaining.
Aaron Scott answered with a St. John’s 3-pointer to cut Georgia’s lead to one with 12 seconds remaining. As tough as that situation was, the Bulldogs responded.
Tyrin Lawrence was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit both free throws to push Georgia ahead by three with 10 seconds to go. St. John’s (5-2) tried to respond late, but Demary stole the ball to prevent the tying attempt and seal the Georgia victory.
