5 Lumberjacks punch tickets to Section 8AA individual finals

Oct. 7—GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Bemidji High School girls tennis team keeps rolling, even away from group competition.

Six Lumberjacks competed in Grand Forks, N.D., on Friday in the Section 8AA North Tournament, with five of them advancing to the finals.

Two BHS doubles teams competed against each other in the sub-section doubles bracket.

Sam Wood and Lilly Caron beat Fergus Falls’ Carsyn and Dillyn Lill in the opening round in three sets before beating Little Falls’ Brooke and Olivia Litke 6-2, 6-2. Wood and Caron took down top-seeded Ashtyn Lill and Hattie Fullhart in three sets to clinch a spot in the title match.

At the bottom of the bracket, Elena Peterson and Megan Berg made quick work of Olivia Dreessen and Kylie Markuson of Moorhead with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Peterson and Berg then beat Brainerd’s Rebekah Soukup and Jessica Cole in three sets before rolling past Brainerd’s Ericah Folden and Kamryn Kraemer 6-3, 6-0.

In the title match, Peterson and Berg took down Wood and Caron 6-2, 6-3. Both teams earned spots in the Section 8AA doubles final bracket.

On the singles side, Bailey Rupp made a run to a second-place finish. She dispatched third-seeded Brooke Mulholland of Brained 6-3, 6-0 before knocking off Little Falls’ Natalie Graeve in straight sets. She then beat No. 2 seed Madi Anderson 6-3, 6-1 before falling to top-seeded Ruby Ellison of Fergus Falls in straight sets.

Liz Peterson was Bemidji’s other solo competitor. She took down Detroit Lakes’ Isabelle Wolf 6-1, 6-1 before losing to No. 4 Addison Stevenson 6-3, 7-6.

Elena Peterson and Berg earned the North’s top seed and will take on Sartell’s Greta Crandall and Caitlyn Burns on Oct. 12 in the doubles final bracket. Wood and Caron are the No. 2 seed out of the North and will play against Annandale’s Felicity Fischer. Bailey Rupp is also a No. 2 seed and will take on Annandale’s Elle Rassier.
