Manchester United shared the spoils against Aston Villa with a goalless draw on Sunday.
The Red Devils went into the Premier League game on a four-match winless streak and they failed to end the run after another disappointing attacking display.
However, they were much better defensively and Jonny Evans was the stand-out performer. The 36-year-old was a surprise selection but proved his credentials.
Evans won 11 out of his 12 duels, a success rate of 92%. He was successful with each of his four tackles (100%) and also made three clearances at Villa Park.
Villa were restricted to just one shot on target. Speaking after the game, former United star Dimitar Berbatov praised Evans and said that other United stars should take notice and play better.
Evans’ inclusion in the starting line-up was met with surprise from many United fans, but the centre-back rolled back the years with a stand-out performance.
He may not be a regular starter due to his age and fitness, but has shown that he still has plenty to offer to the team with his presence in and around the box.
United have now gone five matches without a win, but the goalless draw against Unai Emery’s side could be enough to keep manager Erik ten Hag at the helm.
The Dutch tactician was under immense pressure heading into the encounter. A defeat of any kind would have probably paved the way for his imminent sacking.
