Zion Williamson out indefinitely after being diagnosed with hamstring strain

Date:

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson has suffered yet another major setback. The Pelicans announced Saturday the 24-year-old forward has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and will be out indefinitely.

Williamson missed Friday night’s loss to the Orlando Magic with left hamstring tightness and underwent medical imaging Saturday morning. He will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

After making a splash in his first two seasons, Williamson did not play in the 2021-2022 season after sustaining a fracture in his right foot during the offseason. He was sidelined again in January 2023 with a season-ending hamstring injury, finally returning to the court at the beginning of last season.

He suffered yet another hamstring injury in April during the Pelicans’ play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Between his health and his hyper-specific talents, Williamson has been a difficult player to form a team around. Since Williamson was selected No. 1 overall by New Orleans in 2019, the Pelicans have had winning records in two of five seasons and have made the playoffs twice before ultimately losing in the first round.

New Orleans is not off to a great start this year, going 3-7 to begin the season.
