Australia v Pakistan: Tourists win third ODI in Perth to seal series victory

Date:

Pakistan thrashed Australia by eight wickets in Perth to claim their first one-day series win in the country for 22 years.

Shaheen Shah Afridi took 3-32 and Naseem Shah 3-54 to help bowl an under-strength Australia out for only 140 at Optus Stadium.

Pakistan cruised home with 23.1 overs to spare thanks to 42 from Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique’s 37 and an unbeaten 30 from Mohammad Rizwan.

Australia rested their Test players before the five-match series against India starting on 22 November.

“It was a great feeling for us as a country, as a nation – everyone is so excited,” said pace bowler Shaheen.

Asked to bat first, Australia could not recover from slipping from 20-0 to 88-6, with Cooper Connolly retiring hurt because of a suspected broken hand after being struck by Mohammad Hasnain.

Sean Abbott top-scored for the hosts with 30, while six batters failed to reach double figures.

“Our whole batting line-up really didn’t get going at all throughout the series,” said captain Josh Inglis.

Pakistan openers Ayub and Shafique put on 84 for the first wicket before captain Rizwan and Babar Azam wrapped up a 2-1 series win.

Australia won the first ODI by two wickets and Pakistan the second by nine wickets.

They begin a three-match T20 series on Thursday in Brisbane.
