The back-to-back Taunton Daily Gazette Boys Basketball Player of the Year is continuing his hot streak at the collegiate level.

University of Hartford freshman guard Troy Santos was named the Conference of New England Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week Monday following an impressive NCAA Division 3 debut Saturday. The Taunton resident led the Hawks with 27 points, including three 3-pointers, while recording five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals in an 82-79 non-conference loss to Mitchell College.

The 2024 Taunton High graduate became the latest member of the Tigers’ 1,000 point club in February, reaching the four-figure mark early in the regular season finale against King Philip. He finished his high school career with 1,054 points while leading the Hockomock League in points per game (24.2) during his senior season.

“He just loves the game of basketball,” Taunton coach Colbey Santos (no relation) said of him in February. “You’ve got to literally kick him out of the gym and tell him he needs some rest days, but he genuinely likes it.”

Santos will look to keep momentum going and help put Hartford in the win column Tuesday with a trip to Nashua, N.H. to face Rivier University followed by a journey up I-91 to take on Vermont State University- Johnson Saturday.

Troy wasn’t the only Santos to make a debut Saturday, as older brother, fellow 1,000 point scorer and 2021-22 Taunton Daily Gazette Boys Basketball Player of the Year Trent Santos made his first appearance for UMass Dartmouth. The sophomore guard, a transfer from Assumption University, had five points, including a 3-pointer, off the bench for the Corsairs in an 87-77 loss to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As for their alma mater, Taunton boys basketball is set to kickoff the 2024-25 season on Dec. 16 at home against Foxboro.
