Pep Guardiola signs contract extension to stay at Manchester City

Manchester City have confirmed Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year deal, to keep him at the club until 2027.

The 53-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season, and there were widespread rumours that he may depart alongside director of football, and close friend, Txiki Begiristain, whose departure was confirmed last month.

Instead, Guardiola is staying, and will now work with Begiristain’s replacement, Hugo Viana, who is making the move from Sporting CP.

Guardiola was appointed as City manager in 2016 after hugely successful spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He has continued that dominance at the Etihad Stadium, winning 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023.

The deal means the tactician will have been in charge of City for 10 seasons. In comparison, he spent only seven years combined at the Nou Camp and Allianz Arena.

Guardiola’s contract is not believed to include a break clause should City face relegation from the Premier League in the event they are found guilty of financial wrongdoing.

The club’s legal case with the Premier League over 115 charges of alleged financial breaches is ongoing.
