England in New Zealand: Brydon Carse and Zak Crawley impress in warm-up against PM XI

Date:

Brydon Carse took four wickets and Zak Crawley scored 94 on day one of England’s warm-up match before the three-Test series in New Zealand.

The two-day contest against a youthful Prime Minister’s XI saw England led on Saturday by Ollie Pope, with captain Ben Stokes sitting out. It is thought his absence is not fitness-related.

Bowling first in Queenstown, England dismissed the hosts for 136 with the seamers dominant. Along with Carse’s 4-48, Gus Atkinson claimed 3-15 and Chris Woakes 3-25, while 17-year-old Snehith Reddy scored 60 for the PM’s XI.

England were then bowled out for 249 in 45.1 overs in reply, giving them an overnight lead of 113.

Crawley made 94 from 90 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes, while Ollie Pope’s 42 and Harry Brook’s 27 were among the other contributions.

Jordan Cox, who is set to make his Test debut on the tour as wicketkeeper with Jamie Smith absent for the birth of his first child, scored 11 off 13 balls.

Other members of the squad, including Stokes, Olly Stone and Jack Leach, may feature on day two.

The first Test begins at 22:00 GMT on Wednesday, 27 November.
