Live: Australia strikes first ball after lunch as brilliant Jaiswal continues India’s dominance in Perth

Hazlewood is charging in at Jaiswal.

The crowd erupts as the Indian hero emerges from the dugout like a man on a mission.

He wasn’t up to it in the first innings but can he make amends against this beaten and busted Australian attack?

Kohli is still trying to boss the bowlers by standing outside his crease, which is so risky on a pitch with extra bounce.

Wowee. Straight after the break, Hazlewood rumbles in around the wicket, gets a hint of movement away and finds the outside edge of Devdutt Padikkal.

Maybe he went a little harder at it, or maybe it’s the effect of the harder new ball, but this time it carries to Steve Smith at second slip. Although still only just.

Can he find something with this new ball?

Does the absence of Australia’s bowling coach go some way to explaining he struggles with the ball the past two days?

More than 100 runs in that session, another utterly dominant one from the Indian batters.

Australia look absolutely flat.

There seems to be very little energy out there in the middle, very little enthusiasm to handle the sizable task at hand, and very little clue on how to take any wickets.

The new ball has not helped much, if any, with the ball flying off the bat towards the ropes.

India will want to bat and bat and bat and bat to grind this creaking bowling attack into the dust – so unless Australia can pull something out of the fire, expect more of the same for the rest of the day.

FOUR! Padikkal slashes that through backward point for another boundary! Wide from Starc, Padikkal was onto it like a flash and the Indian batters are just doing it too easy at the moment.

Now that’s a decent one, hitting the thigh pad, drawing a much-needed bit of excitement in the team out on the field.

Hazlewood, from around the wicket, is looking much better to the left hander.

There’s an appeal as Jaiswal looks to work the ball down the leg side, the appeal is muted so it must have been pad.

Wide outside off, Jaiswal is more than tempted to have a go at that, but decides against it.

Good yorker, swinging out a bit by Starc, Jaiswal does very well to keep it out. There was a bit of late movement there for the Aussie quick. Will it be enough?

Josh Hazlewood has a brand new cherry in his paws.

FOUR! Down the leg side, swinging away from Carey, who dives, gets a hand to it, but not enough to slow its progress sufficiently for it to get to the rope. Mitch Starc at wide fine leg did not make much of an effort to stop it, it must be said.

FOUR BYES! Down the leg side, Carey nowhere near it this time and this is sloppy from Hazlewood, who is ill-disciplined from around the wicket. Lots of swing there, but that was poor.

Now he fends to point – there is no run after a sharp shout in the negative.

Padikkal defends solidly to see out a maiden.

Glenn McGrath is grumpy in the ABC commentary box.

“The horse has bolted here. Australia would have hoped to get two or maybe three before the new ball and make some inroads into the Indian batting line-up,” he says.

So what is the point of this?

“I’m wondering why. What is the purpose? You’ve got three quicks who could do a lot more damage,” says former Australian quick, Glenn McGrath.

“I’d rather see Marnus come in and bowl his leggies just for something different.

“He hasn’t been that effective, they (India’s batters) haven’t looked that worried.

“Maybe they’re using that tactic of, ‘I’m too embarrassed to get out to this guy’.”
