The audience at the Optus Stadium in Perth bowed down to Virat Kohli as the former Indian captain notched up his 30th Test hundred to solidify India’s position in the ongoing first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. Dropping anchor on the third day, Kohli faced 143 deliveries and scored an unbeaten 100 before stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah declared India’s second innings.
Kohli received a standing ovation on his way back to the dressing room. But the scene that stole the show was the emotional hug between head coach Gautam Gambhir and India No. 4, who had just showcased why he is the best when it comes to batting in Australian conditions.
Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma, who also marked her attendance at the Optus Stadium, was visibly emotional as the members of Team India stood up to applaud and acknowledge his accomplishment. The BCCI shared a video on microblogging site X, capturing the raw emotions.
Kohli celebrated passionately and gave his wife, Anushka Sharma, credit for supporting him through difficult times.
“Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin. So, she knows everything that goes on behind the scenes. What goes on in the head when you don’t play as well or make a few mistakes. I just want to contribute to the team’s cause. I am not a guy who wants to hang around just for the sake of it. I take pride in performing for my country. The fact that she is here makes it even more special for me,” Kohli told the broadcasters.
The Indians dominated the third day to first set an improbable 534-run target for the hosts before reducing them to 12/3 at the close of play. Once Kohli reached an unprecedented seventh Test century Down Under, Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah declared at 487 for 6 with five overs remaining.
