The Spartans kicked off their tournament in Hawaii with a strong effort against the Colorado Buffaloes. MSU jumped out to a 38-25 lead heading into halftime, and though the Buffaloes tried to keep things close in the second half, Michigan State kept its distance, securing a 72-56 victory, the team’s third win in a row.
10 different Spartans registered points on Monday, with Jase Richardson leading the team with 13 points.
Memphis is coming off a huge victory for its program, as they upset the second-ranked UConn Huskies in their quarterfinal matchup. It was a very tight game throughout, with the Tigers managing to pull out a 99-97 win in overtime.
The Spartans are trying to get to the final in Maui for the first time since winning the invitational in 1991. In their last four appearances, MSU has failed to even get to the championship game. This is also Memphis’ sixth appearance in the showcase, their first since 2011. However, the Tigers have never made it to the championship game.
This will be just the third meeting between Michigan State and Memphis, with the Spartans winning the last matchup in Detroit in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
