When the Giants take the field for a divisional bout against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday at AT&T Stadium, they could be without their new starting quarterback.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Tuesday that Tommy DeVito is dealing with a right forearm injury, and while he’s hopeful the second-year pro starts on Thanksgiving, the chance of him being ready is “not 100 percent.”
As a precautionary measure, the Giants are limiting DeVito in practice and having current backup quarterback Drew Lock take first-team reps.
DeVito, who’s slated to start his second straight game since the Giants benched and ultimately waived Daniel Jones last week, didn’t have a memorable 2024 debut. He took a beating in the team’s 30-7 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, as he was sacked four times and hit nine times. He also threw for just 189 yards with no touchdowns.
Late in the fourth quarter, DeVito was forced to miss one play after taking a huge hit on an incomplete pass deep inside Giants territory. Lock then entered and completed a short pass to running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. before returning back to the sideline.
If the Giants have to turn to Lock against the Cowboys, it’ll be the former second-round pick’s first NFL start since Week 15 of last season. At that time, Lock was playing for the Seattle Seahawks. He signed a one-year, $5 million free-agent deal with the Giants this past offseason.
