Louisville basketball: Pat Kelsey on ’emotional game’ versus Winthrop
Louisville basketball coach Pat Kelsey said playing against his former Winthrop team was ’emotional’ after the Cardinals beat the Eagles 76-61.
Pat Kelsey has another chance today, against No. 15 Indiana, to notch his first signature win as Louisville basketball coach.
The Cardinals (3-1) are in the Bahamas for the second time this year to compete in the Bad Bow Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis — an eight-team tournament guaranteeing three games in as many days at Atlantis Paradise Island resort. They and the Hoosiers (4-0) tip off the festivities at noon.
If U of L snaps a two-game losing streak to IU with its first win in the series since 2017, it will face either No. 4 Gonzaga or West Virginia in Round 2 on Thanksgiving Day. On the other side of the bracket: No. 23 Arizona, Davidson, Oklahoma and Providence.
Indiana holds a 12-9 advantage over Louisville dating back to 1921.
The Cards are coming off a win last Friday over Winthrop that moved them two games above .500 for the first time since the end of the Chris Mack era. Kelsey enters today’s game 1-14 against ranked opponents across 12 seasons and some change as a Division I head coach — the lone victory coming in 2019 against No. 18 Saint Mary’s, during his time at Winthrop.
The Hoosiers’ final game before the Battle 4 Atlantis was their closest yet, 69-58 over UNC Greensboro last Thursday. That formidable Tennessee team that beat Louisville by 22 points earlier this month at the KFC Yum! Center and now ranks sixth in the country? Woodson’s bunch took them down on the road, 66-62, in a preseason exhibition.
