Official: Milan lock down Gabbia to new contract until 2029

Milan have officially announced the extension of their contract with defender Matteo Gabbia until June 2029.

He is a product of the Rossoneri youth academy and had gone on loan spells to Lucchese and Villarreal before returning in January 2024.

Since then, he has become something of a regular in the back four at San Siro and made eight appearances this season between Serie A and the Champions League, earning a call-up for Italy.

It would’ve been more, especially after his goal in the 2-1 Derby della Madonnina victory over Inter on September 22, but Gabbia was out for a month with a muscular injury.

Milan teased the extension with an image of him in a cage and the term ‘locked down’ – because Gabbia literally translates as ‘Cage.’

The central defender turned 25 last month and has amassed 84 competitive appearances in the Milan jersey at senior level, contributing five goals and one assist.

According to Sky Sport Italia amongst others, the new contract will see him earn €2.2m per season net, practically doubling his current salary.

His contract had been due to expire in June 2026 and he was earning circa €1m per season net.
