At CITM 2024 in Shanghai, Thailand showcased its rich array of attractions and commitment to sustainable tourism, aiming to captivate high-end Chinese travelers through immersive, environmentally-conscious experiences.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is highlighting the country’s wide range of travel experiences at the China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2024, taking place from November 22-24 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.

TAT is heading a delegation of 51 Thai tourism businesses and airline partners, showcasing Thailand’s attractions to affluent Chinese travelers under the theme “Let’s Have Fun in Amazing Thailand.”

Strengthening Tourism Ties Between Thailand and China

The Thai delegation is headed by Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with China as the two nations approach the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2025.

Central to Thailand’s presence at the event is its expansive 361-square-meter pavilion, which features interactive multimedia presentations and engaging activities designed to highlight the country’s vibrant attractions. The “5 Must-Do in Thailand” campaign invites visitors to:

  • Must Taste: Experience the rich flavors of Thailand’s cuisine
  • Must See: Visit iconic landmarks and famous attractions
  • Must Seek: Uncover hidden gems across the kingdom
  • Must Buy: Shop for unique, authentic Thai products
  • Must Try: Immerse in the diverse and enriching Thai experiences

This initiative forms part of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s broader strategy to attract middle-class and affluent Chinese travelers, encouraging extended stays, higher spending, and positioning Thailand as a dynamic, sustainable destination.

Fostering Growth in Sustainable Tourism

Through its presentation of Thailand’s dynamic tourism experiences, TAT aims to enhance the country’s long-term attractiveness as a premier destination. By highlighting a wide range of activities and experiences, the agency seeks to cultivate enduring interest among travelers.

TAT’s efforts are focused on reinforcing Thailand’s reputation as a sustainable and desirable travel choice. By promoting environmentally-conscious initiatives, the Tourism Authority is committed to ensuring that the kingdom remains a top destination for future generations of visitors.

Encouraging Developments in Chinese Tourism

Between January 1 and November 10, 2024, Thailand welcomed over 5.86 million Chinese visitors, making China the top source of international arrivals. Chinese tourists are particularly attracted to Thailand’s exceptional hospitality, rich cultural heritage, and iconic landmarks, with Shanghai emerging as a major hub for outbound travel.

This impressive growth is further supported by a 65% increase in flight seat capacity compared to the previous year, driven by new direct routes from cities such as Xi’an, Changsha, and Zhengzhou. Additional measures like the visa exemption policy for Chinese nationals and promotional initiatives such as the Amazing Thailand Road Show in China, along with TAT’s active participation at CITM, are set to help Thailand reach its goal of 7.3 million Chinese visitors in 2024.
