DOT bares 4 accolades at World Travel Awards – Manila Standard

Date:

The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced the country’s four prestigious victories at the 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final Gala Ceremony, held on Nov. 24, 2024, in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.

The country was named World’s Leading Dive Destination for the sixth consecutive year, reinforcing its bid as the top destination for diving enthusiasts.

Manila also earned the title of World’s Leading City Destination for the second year in a row, while Boracay was recognized as the World’s Leading Luxury Island Destination, showcasing its pristine beaches and exclusive offerings.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco expressed her gratitude for the global recognition, acknowledging the collective efforts behind these wins.

“We are immensely proud of the Philippines’ continued success on the world stage. These awards reflect our commitment to sustainability and inclusivity in tourism, supported by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s vision to position the Philippines as a premier tourism hub in Asia,” she said.

The DOT also won its first-ever title as World’s Leading Tourist Board, highlighting its successful initiatives in promoting the Philippines as a top travel destination.

Under the Marcos administration, the department has focused on sustainable tourism development, with strategies that prioritize connectivity, convenience, and quality.

The DOT’s National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023–2028 outlines key initiatives, including infrastructure upgrades, improved accessibility, and digital innovations.

The recent accolades add to the recognition the Philippines received at the 2024 WTA Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony, held in the Philippines in September.

The country won eight regional awards, including Asia’s Leading Dive Destination, Beach Destination, and Island Destination.

Notable landmarks such as Intramuros and Boracay earned top honors, while Cebu was named Asia’s Leading Wedding Destination.

Frasco was also honored with a special award for Transformational Leadership in Tourism.
