India’s tourism sector has reaffirmed its importance to the economy by contributing 5% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the fiscal year 2022-23, according to Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. In a written response in the Lok Sabha, the minister detailed the sector’s performance, noting the significant role played by foreign tourist arrivals, medical tourism, and leisure travel.
Tourism GDP Contribution Over the Years
The percentage contribution of the tourism sector to India’s GDP has shown notable fluctuations over recent years. While it stood at 5.01% in 2018-19, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp decline to 1.50% in 2020-21. A gradual recovery began in 2021-22 with a contribution of 1.75%, reaching 5% in 2022-23. Foreign Tourist Arrivals and Trends
India recorded 9.52 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, highlighting the country’s global appeal. Of these, leisure travel emerged as the dominant purpose, accounting for 46.2% of total arrivals. Meanwhile, the Indian diaspora contributed 26.9%, emphasizing their role in driving inbound tourism.
