IU basketball guard Kanaan Carlyle will miss game against Sam Houston State

Date:

Indiana sophomore guard Kanaan Carlyle will miss a second straight game when the Hoosiers face Sam Houston State on Tuesday evening.  That’s according to coach Mike Woodson on his radio show on Monday.

“He didn’t practice the last two days, won’t play tomorrow,” Woodson said.  “Hopefully he’ll be back soon.”

Carlyle, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury, also missed IU’s final game in The Bahamas against Providence on Friday.

The 6-foot-3 guard is averaging 4.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists this season.  He is shooting just 27% from the field to start the season.

Fifth-year senior guard Trey Galloway started in place of Carlyle on Friday in the Battle 4 Atlantis finale and played his best game of the season.  Galloway scored 18 points and added five assists and five rebounds in the win over Providence.

Without Carlyle, Indiana is relatively thin in the backcourt as the Hoosiers have been dealing with additional injuries among the reserves.

But Woodson also said on the radio redshirt freshman guard Jakai Newton and sophomore guard Gabe Cupps could be available to play Tuesday.

Newton has been dealing with a hamstring injury and was not in uniform the last few games but has practiced “a little” the last couple days according to Woodson.  The IU coach did say Newton’s knee that forced him to miss the entire 2023-24 season has been “doing great.”

Cupps has also been dealing with injuries and has only played sparingly of late.  Woodson said Cupps hasn’t practiced much in the last week and a half.

“All you can do is play the guys that ready to go and get them ready to play,” Woodson said.

Indiana and Sam Houston State play Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. ET (BTN).
