Columbus police say male electrocuted on power line may have been trying to steal copper

Date:

Columbus police are investigating after discovering a male’s body hanging from an AEP power line Monday afternoon on the city’s Southeast Side.

Sgt. Joe Albert said that police received a call around 2:43 p.m. on a report of a body hanging from a power line in the 800 block of Stambaugh Avenue. The victim, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Albert said that the division’s homicide team would not be responding to the scene because police believe there was no foul play in the male’s death. Police believe he may have been trying to steal copper wiring when he was electrocuted.

An AEP spokesperson confirmed that they sent work crews immediately to the scene Monday afternoon and that they are working with Columbus police.
