Most golfers in the field this week at the Masters were busy practicing on Tuesday.

Bryson DeChambeau, however, slipped away from Augusta National to play a different type of golf.

He went disc golfing, and actually linked up with a random family to play the round at Lake Olmstead Park.

Bryson DeChambeau’s new hobby

Augusta resident Seth Straughn took his son and a friend to the course to spend the afternoon, as the kids are on spring break, and spotted DeChambeau ahead of them — though he wasn’t quite sure who he was at first.

“We were chatting and I noticed that one of them looked familiar and he was wearing Puma,” Straughn said, via the PGA Tour. “I said, ‘Hey, what’s your name?’ He said, ‘Bryson.’ That’s when it clicked.”

From that point on, DeChambeau and his friends paired up with Straughn and the boys to finish out their rounds. He even signed a couple of discs for the boys.

“My first thought was, ‘Stay calm,’ Straughn said, via the PGA Tour. “It was surreal because you expect these guys on TV to appear larger than life but that was not the case. He was so nice to take pictures with us, but as time passed by it was just like chatting with anyone else. He was really cool.

“He seemed like a guy just trying to relax and have some fun. As a dad, the fact that he enjoyed the company of the boys and had a good time with Parker meant a lot. I’ll be a fan of his forever now.”

Though the hobby is apparently a new one for DeChambeau — Straughn said DeChambeau told him it was just his second time playing — he will have to quickly switch gears back to the Masters.

The 27-year-old is a favorite to claim the green jacket on Sunday at Augusta, something he’s yet to do in his golf career. DeChambeau has already won twice so far this season, last month at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and in September at the rescheduled U.S. Open. He’s finished inside the top-10 five times this season, too, including a third-place finish at The Players Championship, and climbed to a career-best fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings.

DeChambeau did return to Augusta for a practice round Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s opening round. Perhaps that break is just what he needs mentally to grab his second major championship.

Bryson DeChambeau plays in a practice round before the 2021 Masters.
