A student reportedly died Monday after experiencing a medical emergency at La Quinta Middle School, KESQ first reported.
Cal Fire responded to a report of a medical emergency involving a juvenile at 10:11 a.m. in the 78-000 block of Avenue 50 in La Quinta.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to assist Riverside County Fire at 10:23 a.m., but the student had already been transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital before their arrival.
Details about the student’s identity or the cause of death were not immediately released. Desert Sands Unified School District has yet to confirm the death, but did send the following written statement via a spokesperson:
“We care deeply for our students and their families and are committed to respecting the family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. “As further details emerge and with the family’s consent, we will share any information they wish to communicate.”
Counseling and emotional support was offered Monday to help students and staff cope and will remain available in the coming days.
Monday marked the first day back to school after Thanksgiving break.
