Fight at LPS basketball game halts play, students removed from gym

Date:

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A boys varsity basketball game between Lincoln East and Lincoln Southwest High Schools was suspended Thursday night after tensions between the schools’ student sections escalated into an unsafe environment, according to Lincoln Public Schools officials.

The incident occurred during the game at Lincoln East, where students from both schools were reportedly throwing items and shouting inappropriate comments. The game was paused while administrators and Lincoln Police worked to clear the gym of student spectators from both sections.

Once the students were removed, the game resumed without further disruption.

LPS Director of Athletics and Activities Dr. JJ Toczek sent a letter to students and families Thursday night, emphasizing the importance of following behavior expectations to maintain a safe and respectful atmosphere at school events.

“To be clear this type of dangerous and unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated at any Lincoln Public Schools contest – or any activity where LPS students are competing.” Toczek said.

School officials did not comment on any potential disciplinary actions but reiterated that failure to comply with behavior expectations could lead to consequences.
