Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side’s aim is to remain in the Barclays Women’s Super League’s title race going into the Christmas break.
After eight rounds of matches, Manchester City are five points adrift of league leaders Chelsea. The Cityzens are likely to be The Blues’ only title rivals this season.
When speaking to the media ahead of this afternoon’s fixture against Leicester City at The Joie Stadium, Taylor said that the aim is to remain in the hunt for a long-awaited league title.
“We are pleased to be back in-front of our fans at The Joie Stadium and we will be looking to pick up the good form that we had in the first third of the season,” Taylor said. We are looking to really try and cement our status at the top of the league and make sure that going into the Christmas break, we are still there going for the title.”
This afternoon’s opponents Leicester City have struggled to score goals so far this season but defensively, they’ve been excellent. Taylor said that his side will need to work the spaces well to exploit The Foxes’ back-line.
He said “I think they’ve had some issues at the top end of the pitch. They’ve had various players playing in those positions. They have striker options but Amandine [Miquel] has tended to go with players that are maybe not necessarily used to that position. I think Ruby [Mace] has played up there and a couple of other players. I think that’s what we are expecting to happen.
“Of course, they don’t give too much away but for us, we are used to playing those types of teams that are really difficult to break down. It’ll just be about finding and using the spaces as much as we can.”
Manchester City will come up against former player Ruby Mace at The Joie Stadium this afternoon. The youngster made her senior England debut last week after featuring regularly for her new club this season. Taylor admitted that Mace’s decision to join Leicester City has been a good one.
He said “It’s really good for her, really positive that it’s happened. For us, it was difficult because in her time here, we went through a change of position where she felt that she wanted to go back and play in midfield areas. Sometimes, we have to go with it and it’s worked out for her; she’s gone to Leicester, played regular football and got her opportunity with England.”
