An athlete who participated in the Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells-La Quinta triathlon died Sunday, according to organizers.
A statement posted on the Ironman Facebook page stated that the athlete required medical attention near the swim finish. They were taken to a nearby hospital where they died.
No information was provided on the athlete.
The Ironman consists of three courses, running, biking and swimming. The swim portion of the Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells-La Quinta triathlon is a one-loop, 1.2-mile swim in Lake Cahuilla, a reservoir in La Quinta.
“We thank the water safety and medical personnel who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical support,” the Ironman statement read. “We share our deepest sympathies with the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time.”
