Nick Sirianni: Passing game wasn’t up to our standard yesterday

Date:

The Eagles won their ninth straight game on Sunday, but the postgame locker room wasn’t all smiles

Wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith aired their frustrations with an aerial attack that picked up just 108 yards in the 22-16 win over the Panthers. On Monday, head coach Nick Sirianni said he likes that he has “a very mature team with great leaders that are hyper focused on how to get better” when asked about the atmosphere around the team and said it is obviously an area that needs improvement.

“It’s no secret that we weren’t up to our standard in that area yesterday,” Sirianni said in a videoconference. “It’s just going back to work.”

Brown said that it was difficult to get into a rhythm while being targeted four times in the game and pointedly said “passing” when asked what the team needs to do better. Sirianni said that he and Brown speak often and that the team wants the ball to go his way.

“A.J. is a great football player that we are always trying to get the ball into his hands,” Sirianni said. “It doesn’t always work.”

Sirianni also fielded questions about quarterback Jalen Hurts throwing deep less often in the last few games than he did earlier in the season. He said Hurts is trying to go to the best place to beat the defense on a particular play and noted that the quarterback has had a big hand in their current winning streak.

“Make no mistake, we’ve won nine games in a row and Jalen Hurts is a big reason why we’ve won nine in a row,” Sirianni said.

The Eagles will be trying for a franchise-record 10th straight win against the Steelers in Week 15 and a more productive passing game wouldn’t hurt that effort.
