Amit Thakur, a social worker and the captain of the Himachal Pradesh Wheelchair Cricket Team, has been honoured with the Divyang Swabhiman Award-2024. The award was presented to him by Justice Vipin Chand Dixit of the Allahabad High Court during a grand felicitation ceremony held at Hanumant Niwas, Laxman Ghat, Ayodhya. The event celebrated the achievements of around 22 individuals with disabilities from various states.
Thakur, a resident of Makdoga village in Thakri Matti Panchayat of Chamba district, is 85% disabled and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Despite his disability, he has overcome challenges with remarkable determination and spirit. Known for his incredible performances on the cricket field, Amit’s ability to hit boundaries and sixes while on a wheelchair has left many in awe.
Currently serving as a teacher in the Himachal Pradesh Elementary Education Department, Amit has also been actively working with national organisations for the past six years. His efforts aim to improve the lives of individuals affected by spinal cord injuries, encouraging them to remain hopeful and move forward in life.
Amit is credited with pioneering wheelchair cricket in Himachal Pradesh and now leads the state team. His initiative is seen as a significant step toward boosting the confidence and self-reliance of people with disabilities.
The Divyang Swabhiman Award-2024 is a testament to Amit Thakur’s contributions and efforts in society. His journey serves as an inspiring example of how determination and dedication can overcome even the greatest challenges.
