Saunders fouls PJ Haggerty, who makes both free throws to push the Memphis lead back to four points. Ames takes too long driving the ball inside and makes a pointless layup with just 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Memphis quickly inbounds the ball to kill the rest of the clock. Memphis wins 64-62.

Virginia gets a stop and had a chance to get back within two or even one, but Saunders misses a three and Cofie grabs the offensive rebound and Ames is blocked on a layup attempt. Memphis calls timeout with 49.2 seconds remaining.

Memphis 57, Virginia 51 | 3:26 2H

UVA plays a solid possession of defense but PJ Carter hits a corner three as the shot clock expires. That’s just the third three of the night for Memphis, who is shooting 3/18 from beyond the arc. UVA isn’t doing much better at 5/16 from three-point range. Penny Hardaway calls timeout with his team leading by six with seven minutes to play.

Memphis 50, Virginia 44 | 7:12 2H

After a lengthy review, the refs call a technical foul on Dai Dai Ames for contact he made against PJ Haggerty that the refs determined came after the whistle, which is a flimsy ruling at best. Haggerty gets four free throws out of the play and makes three of them and just like that, Memphis leads by eight. Elijah Saunders gets a clean look from three and he drills it, Virginia’s fifth three of the game. Murray drives baseline and is fouled by Hunter, making both free throws. UVA calls timeout.

Memphis 47, Virginia 44 | 9:13 2H

Tyrese Hunter just barely keeps his pivot foot and gets to the backboard for a layup. Rohde throws his second bad pass turnover of the game and is replaced by Dai Dai Ames. Virginia gets a stop and then Ames finds Buchanan under the basket for a dunk. UVA turns the ball over in transition and Memphis capitalizes as PJ Haggerty takes it the distance for a layup plus a foul on Ames. Buchanan is called for goaltending on Dainja and Memphis takes the lead. Virginia breaks the press and Murray drives strong to the rack for a layup. Memphis beats UVA with another back cut as Hunter gets inside for a layup plus a foul on Ames. Virginia has been called for eight team fouls in the second half.

Memphis 41, Virginia 39 | 11:57 2H

Virginia works the clock down to its final moment before McKneely drives and dumps the ball to Jacob Cofie, who quickly scores off the glass. Cofie is called for his third personal foul trying to box out Moussa Cisse and then moments later, he’s called for his fourth foul as PJ Haggerty draws the contact from Cofie. Blake Buchanan replaces Cofie and Haggerty makes both free throws. Haggerty draws another foul, this time on Rohde, and makes both free throws again. Virginia turns it over again and Memphis scores as Haggerty gets behind Rohde on a backdoor cut for an easy layup. Memphis has really turned up the pressure so far in the second half and UVA is struggling to handle it. Elijah Saunders tries to dunk on Cisse and the dunk doesn’t fall, but he does draw a foul and make both free throws. Colby Rogers pulls up and hits a mid-range jumper. Haggerty drives past Rohde with ease and scores. UVA led by as many as 11 points, but Memphis has turned up the pressure and has cut the lead to three points.

Memphis 31, Virginia 34 | 15:18 2H

Dainja rolls free to the basket after setting a screen and Jourdain finds him for an easy layup. PJ Carter knocks down an open three, just the second of the night for Memphis. Isaac McKneely gets free in the corner on an inbounds play and he knocks down the three off the feed from Ames. That was McKneely’s first points of the night. UVA gets another stop and then Murray’s full-court heave goes off the rim. That would have brought the house down, but Virginia takes a 30-21 lead over No. 21 Memphis into halftime.

Memphis 21, Virginia 30 | Halftime

With the shot clock winding down, Taine Murray explodes to the basket on a drive and slams home a two-hand dunk. Robinson is running on all adrenaline right now; he’s playing very well but he just tried to do too much blocking a shot and was called for goaltending. Ames gets into the paint and draws a foul on Colby Rogers, making 1/2 free throws. Virginia delivers a couple of excellent defensive possessions and then Taine Murray faces up his defender on the low block and drives right past him for a layup. Memphis entered tonight as the second-best three-point shooting team in the country. Tigers are 1/13 from beyond the arc so far.

Memphis 16, Virginia 26 | 2:54 1H

Virginia is having trouble boxing out Dain Dainja. He has four offensive rebounds already and now he draws Cofie’s second personal foul and makes both free throws. Dainja draws a foul on Buchanan, his second personal and now Sanchez has to go to Anthony Robinson, who makes a few huge plays in a row right away. First, he forces Dainja into a missed fadeaway jumper, then he grabs an offensive rebound on the other end, then he boxes out Dainja for a tough defensive board and then gets a pass from McKneely and rolls to the basket for a tough basket through contact plus a foul. What a stretch for the redshirt freshman Robinson.

Memphis 14, Virginia 21 | 7:32 1H

Power gets the ball late in the shot clock and uses a nice pump-fake move to draw a foul, making both free throws before checking out of the game. That was a nice stretch of minutes for Power. Virginia spreads the floor and lets Jacob Cofie attack Dainja in the post; Cofie uses a nice spin move to score off the glass. Memphis commits its sixth turnover of the game and Taine Murray knocks down a three on the other end. 12 of UVA’s 19 points have come off of Memphis turnovers and the Hoos lead 19-10. Timeout Penny Hardaway.

Memphis 10, Virginia 19 | 10:32 1H

TJ Power checks into the game and finds Blake Buchanan wide open rolling to the basket for an easy dunk. Rohde gets the ball on the low block and scores with a jump hook off the glass – the rare post move from Rohde. Tyrese Hunter gets an open look from three and unsurprisingly, the 51.6% shooter knocks it down. Rohde hits a deep three on the other end to match. Memphis again gets a good look in transition after a UVA miss, with Haggerty scoring off the glass.

Memphis 10, Virginia 12 | 11:39 1H

McKneely misses a three and Memphis gets the ball going in transition with PJ Haggerty hitting a baseline floater. UVA turned the ball over earlier while trying to break the full-court press and now Dai Dai Ames has to burn a timeout as he gets trapped in the corner just across half court.

Memphis 5, Virginia 5 | 14:46 1H

Memphis wins the tip and we’re underway here at John Paul Jones Arena. Dai Dai Ames is back and he makes a play on the first possession of the game, coming up with a steal. We go three minutes without either team scoring before Elijah Saunders scores with a putback off the glass. Memphis commits its third turnover of the game and Virginia cashes in as Saunders swishes a corner three. The Tigers finally get on the board as Dain Dainja scores off the glass plus a foul on Jacob Cofie.

Memphis 3, Virginia 5 | 15:57 1H

Here are the starting lineups for both teams:
Memphis: Colby Rogers, PJ Haggerty, Tyrese Hunter, Nick Jourdain, Moussa Cisse
Virginia: Dai Dai Ames, Isaac McKneely, Andrew Rohde, Elijah Saunders, Jacob Cofie

Some significant notes for UVA’s starting lineup as Dai Dai Ames is back after missing the last game with an ankle injury and Jacob Cofie earns his first-career start in place of Blake Buchanan at the center position, a major shake-up for Ron Sanchez and the Cavaliers as they look to get their first ranked win of the season.
