1B Paul Goldschmidt reportedly agrees to 1-year, $12.5 million deal with Yankees

Date:

The New York Yankees are bringing in another veteran hitter this offseason, signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a reported one-year, $12.5 million deal, per multiple reports.

Goldschmidt, the 2022 NL MVP, has spent the past six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. Prior to that, he spent eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondback, becoming a consistent starter in his second year.

The seven-time All-Star will be a veteran boost for the Yankees, who are rebuilding after losing Juan Soto to the Mets. Goldschmidt will be a major force both at the plate and on the field, with the veteran picking up four Gold Gloves (2013, 2015, 2017, 2021) and five Silver Sluggers (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) in his 14-year career.

The 37-year-old first baseman finished last season with 22 home runs and a .245 batting average.

Goldschmidt is the second former MVP to join the Yankees in the past week, with the team acquiring 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger on Wednesday in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. Even with losing Soto, New York has been busy so far this offseason, trading for closer Devin Williams and reliever Fernando Cruz and signing a deal with All-Star starting pitcher Max Fried.
