Officials penalized only the Steelers after a skirmish in the first quarter of their game with the Eagles on Sunday, even though Philadelphia cornerbacks Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell threw punches. In a pool report, referee Alan Eck said “no punches were observed.”
The league announced fines for four players involved in the scuffle, including higher fines for Slay and Mitchell than for the Steelers involved in the play.
Steelers tight end Darnell Washington blocked Slay past the end zone on a Najee Harris run. Slay then threw a punch at Washington before Mitchell and Steelers receiver Calvin Austin got physical with each other.
Eck’s crew penalized the Steelers 15 yards, which incensed coach Mike Tomlin.
Austin was fined $6,173 and and Washington $6,760 for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Slay and Mitchell will pay $14,069 each for unnecessary roughness.
Three other Eagles were fined in the game: Safety Sydney Brown was docked $6,981 for unnecessary roughness on the opening kickoff when he lowered his head to make a tackle and left with a concussion; Linebacker Zack Baun lost $8,888 for unnecessary roughness for a hip-drop tackle; and defensive tackle Jalen Carter will pay $11,817 for unnecessary roughness (striking/kicking/kneeing).
