Former NBA player partners with Caddo Parish coaches to teach next generation of basketball players

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – The basketball season is well underway and former NBA player, Stromile Swift, teamed up with Caddo Parish to host multiple youth basketball skill camps at Booker T. Washington High School.

The goal is to help coach the next generation of hoopers.

The third and final Swift Skills Basketball Camp brought together many young athletes to build a strong foundation of basketball skills. The former NBA hi-flyer brought coaches from around the area to help teach young athletes and give back to the community they grew up in.

”And for me, I just want to give back some of the skills that I’ve gained over the years, some of the knowledge that I’ve gained from coaches and players and really just pour back into my community,” Swift said.

“When you start to see the improvement of kids and they really start to love the game, man, it’s just all worth it for me,” one of the coaches said.

The youngest athletes in attendance focused on the fundamentals like dribbling, passing and playing defense. The older athletes worked with Swift to improve their balance, footwork and how to operate the post.

While Saturday (Dec. 21) marked the final Swift Skills Basketball Camp of 2024, Swift said he wants to do more in the future.

”My end goal is to get coaches from around the city, trainers, and we all just get together and he have the whole city and make it a big extravaganza,” he said. “And everyone gets the opportunity to pour into the kids, and I think it will be great for the city if we can all come together and do that.”

While no camps have been announced yet, Swift told KSLA he hopes to host some during the summer so more athletes will have the chance to attend.
