Ex-Jets star Leon Washington out as member of team’s coaching staff

Date:

Former Jets star Leon Washington is no longer a member of the team’s coaching staff.

Washington, 41, had served as the assistant special teams coach for the team since 2021 when he arrived as part of Robert Saleh’s coaching staff.

A source said the Jets did not renew his contract, which expired at the end of January.

The Jets have undergone some changes with their special teams coaches under coordinator Brant Boyer.

Special teams assistant Michael Ghobrial left to become the special teams coordinator of the Giants.

Dan Shamash is now listed as a special teams assistant, in addition to being the game management coordinator.

Shamash is the person Saleh leans on for strategic advice on situational football like fourth downs or when to challenge.

Washington was a fourth-round pick by the Jets in 2006 out of Florida State.

He played four seasons for the team and was a fan favorite.

Washington was a versatile running back who also was a weapon as a returner and could play Wildcat quarterback.

He scored 19 total touchdowns with the Jets — 13 rushing, four kickoff returns and two receiving.
