Google added a splash of festive cheer to its workplace with an ‘ugly sweater’ contest, and CEO Sundar Pichai didn’t shy away from joining the fun.
In a post on Instagram on Christmas Day, Pichai shared pictures from the quirky event, where his sweater made waves for its distinctly Indian connection.
The contest, held the previous week, saw Google employees sporting colourful knitwear adorned with all manner of festive motifs. Judged by Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, the event featured creative designs that ranged from dazzling patchworks to traditional Christmas symbols.
While many participants embraced flamboyant styles, Pichai’s choice was understated yet uniquely personal. He wore a black pullover featuring cricket bats, a cricket ball, and Christmas trees—a nod to India’s enduring love affair with cricket.
“We closed out 2024 with our first-ever Google-wide ugly sweater holiday contest last week. Gemini was the judge, and I have to say, it has good taste:) Congrats to the winners, and thanks to everyone for the fun end to the year,” the caption of the post reads.

Social media users were quick to spot the connection. Comments poured in, with one saying, “Cricket sweater awesome sir,” while another added, “Love your cricket sweater.”
For Pichai, the sweater seemed to reflect his roots. Born in Chennai, the tech leader has often shared his passion for cricket, even admitting he once dreamt of playing professionally.
The ugly sweater tradition, a staple of holiday festivities, has evolved from its kitschy beginnings in the 1950s to a beloved modern-day trend.
This year, Google’s spin on the tradition brought festive fun to the workplace, with Pichai leading by example—combining cricket, Christmas, and a touch of personal flair.
