NWSL expanding to Denver after ‘record-setting’ fee agreed

The National Women’s Soccer League knows the location of its 16th team in the competition, according to reports in the United States.

The Athletic and Sportico have shared that the league’s newest expansion franchise will be in Denver, Colorado, after a “record-setting $110 million expansion fee agreement.”

An official announcement has yet to be made, but sources claim the first bid payment, backed by chair and CEO of IMA Financial Group, Robert Cohen, was already submitted.

The record-setting fee is more than double the $53 million Bay FC and BOS Nation paid to join the NWSL. The Denver figure is the largest sum ever paid for a professional women’s soccer team in North America.

The new expansion club is expected to begin play in 2026 and will play in a temporary venue before eventually building their own stadium.
