We Are Washington wraps up Juneteenth in style with basketball tournament

Date:

TEXARKANA, Ark. – “We Are Washington” wrapped up its monthlong Juneteenth celebration in style today by honoring one of its own, Terry Rogers, in a basketball game and activities.

The Scholars sponsored the game this morning at the Washington Community Development Center in Texarkana, Arkansas, where Rogers had his own courtside seat for the game.

Rogers said he was happy to be there and that he lives life day by day.

In 1978, Rogers began his 36-year career at the Boys and Girls Club, serving as the club’s assistant director for 25 years.

Basketball player today, Jamal Ray, said the fundraiser is for Terry Roberts and that they do this every year for him.

“Actually, he had more of an impact on my dad and my older uncles and my earlier years like when I was like between five and ten,” said Ray. “He made everyone disciplined and aligned and helped everybody to become a man.”

Rogers had worked with some of the young men playing basketball, and as always, The created a safe haven for them and continued to work to keep them safe and grow into respectable men.
