BELPRE — The 2024 golf season kicked off with a fight for Washington County supremacy at Oxbow Golf Course in Belpre. Athletes from five schools (Belpre, Fort Frye, Frontier, Warren and Waterford) participated to determine bragging rights.
The medalist on the day was Fort Frye’s Chatum Courson with a score of 68, three under par. Belpre’s Carson Moore snagged second with a 73. Reese Lang of Waterford rounded out the podium with a score of 78.
“It went pretty well. I didn’t expect too much out of today, but I went out there and struck the ball good, and rolled in a few puts. Three under, I’ll take it,” said the Cadets’ top golfer after the round.
“Feels pretty good. I’ve definitely got some momentum going into the next match and throughout the rest of the year.”
Courson’s round had some ups and downs, but he managed to pull through, “11 and 12 stabbed me in the back, I went bogey-bogey there, but I got one back on the par 5 on 14. I just kept it in the middle of the fairway all day, hit a bunch of greens. Some puts didn’t fall, but three under is three under. Can’t complain.”

Waterford won the team title with a four-person composite score of 332. The Wildcats had a well-rounded team performance, with Luke Hvizdzak (4th, 80), Braun Doak (7th, 85) and Briceson Cline (10th, 89) all finishing in the top ten overall in addition to Lang.
The Warriors of Warren placed second as a team. They finished with three golfers inside the top ten and a score of 346. Brayden Parsons led the charge with an 82 that was good enough for fifth, followed by Ian Gardner (6th, 84), Liam Nuzum (T8th, 86) and Curtis Reynolds (T12th, 94).
Fort Frye’s score of 406 earned third. In addition to medalist Courson, Carter Brown, Xander Lowe and Jonathan Kramer contributed to the bronze-winning effort.
Belpre finished in fourth with a score of 439. Frontier did not place as a team, but Miley Kiggans of the Cougars finished right outside the top ten with a 91.
