Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington is optimistic about Brandon Drury’s potential turnaround this season. After a strong performance last year, Drury has struggled significantly in 2024, with a batting average of just .157 and only 10 RBIs to his name.
Drury’s current numbers are concerning, as he holds the lowest batting average among players with at least 200 plate appearances this season. His slugging percentage is also at a dismal .195, making it clear that he hasn’t been able to find his rhythm at the plate.
However, there are signs of improvement. In a recent game against the Washington Nationals, Drury managed to drive in two runs and hit a sacrifice fly, showcasing flashes of his former self. Washington noted that Drury’s recent performance indicates he is starting to regain his focus and effectiveness.
“He really swung the bat well last night, and he really played some good defense and he really looked like he was into it,” Angels manager Ron Washington said, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. “So I hope he can maintain that. And if he can maintain that down the stretch, I think he can deliver something for us, because our veteran presence has just been non-existent. And a lot of it has to do with injury.”
Additionally, Drury drew three walks in the following game, a positive sign that he is becoming more selective at the plate. Washington believes that this newfound patience could lead to better hitting opportunities for Drury moving forward.
“Early in the season, you were swinging at all that stuff,” Washington said he told Drury. “Now you’re seeing pitches, and because you’re seeing so many pitches, now all of a sudden, you’re going to be able to pick the ones out that you want to hit. So you’re trending in the right direction.
“You can’t be getting upset because you’re getting walks,” Washington continued. “That’s good. When you’ve been struggling like he’s been struggling, that means he’s seeing the ball, not chasing.”
Despite the challenges of this season, Drury remains hopeful. He has faced tough times in the past but has always found ways to adjust and improve. He is looking for that breakthrough moment to help him start hitting consistently again.
“I’ve had some really bad seasons in the past and I found ways to make adjustments and be a good player again,” Drury said. “For now I’m just looking for that little adjustment to click. Hopefully the last few games is the start to that. I’m waiting to start driving some balls in the gap and over the fence.”
As the season progresses, the Angels are counting on Drury to find his form and contribute to the team’s success.
