SDC MC loves community as much as cricket

Date:

CRICKET HAS long been one of Jamaica’s best-loved sports, its influence transcending boundaries of mere entertainment.

From hitting wickets in backyards or at the community centre to all-island championships, the sport has evolved into a powerful force for community development and social cohesion extending across the 14 parishes.

For Oren Osbourne, the true beauty of cricket lies in its ability to unite people from all walks of life, young and old, within their communities.

As the longstanding master of ceremonies (MC) of the Wray & Nephew-sponsored Social Development Commission (SDC) National Community T20 Cricket Competition since 2006, Osbourne’s deep affinity to the sport is evident.

A proud alumnus of Manchester High School, Osbourne believes: “Cricket is a glorious game of uncertainties. I love that the game brings out the best in people – the camaraderie, the drive to excel, teamwork, but most importantly, the joy that comes from being involved in one’s community in a positive, uplifting way. I am always inspired by the stories of mentorship, especially for the young men and boys that have emerged from the sport. Our players don’t often see just how much they are looked up to in their communities.”

Much like the devoted cricket fans who turn out in droves, braving the sunny weather each season to support their favourite community teams, Osbourne has become a fixture on the pitch, known for his distinct voice and easy rapport with cricket enthusiasts. As the host of the games, he skilfully balances educating fans of all levels about the sport while keeping them engaged.

“I always had a talent for hosting. Cricket is about expecting the unexpected, as no two games are alike. The enjoyment and vibes that I share with my patrons at whichever venue I visit is unmatched. Cricket lovers are passionate about their sport, so a good presenter must have good control of the English language and be able to share statistics in an accessible way. It is important for patrons to feel a part of the game.”

A former SDC employee and graduate of Knox Community College, Osbourne has applied his studies in supervisory management to serve in various roles both on and off the pitch, including as a field supervisor for over 15 years. His extensive knowledge and passion for cricket are unmistakable.

“The SDC has recognised cricket’s deep-rooted cultural significance to Jamaicans, particularly for our young people. Over the years I’ve observed that a lot of the players at the community level transition to national and regional duties to represent the West Indies, which brings me great joy. I am happy that this platform gives players the necessary exposure to be seen by selectors and those in the national cricket association,” he shared.

He continued: “The community-building aspect of cricket is what keeps me coming back. For me, the involvement and interactions it fosters are vital. Many people don’t realise that each community has its own culture, and these games serve as teachable moments for players, officials, and everyone involved to experience and appreciate the diversity that exists. It is important for people to learn how to coexist respectfully, even when faced with defeat.”

He went further to explain: “The economic impact of cricket on Jamaican communities, particularly in rural areas cannot be overlooked either. The financial support the players receive has far-reaching impact on their families as well, so when large entities like Wray &Nephew extend their support, it is a big deal for all involved. We often have vendors from neighbouring communities who showcase their wares at the match, so all around these events bring a needed influx of activity and positivity.”

For over four years, and through their partnership with the SDC, sponsors Wray & Nephew have batted for the natural sporting talent of over 5,000 cricket players islandwide, making a multimillion-dollar contribution to the community sport.
