One-time Inter Milan target Mario Hermoso is on the verge of joining Serie A rivals Roma on a free transfer.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.
Hermoso has been one of the biggest name free agents of the summer transfer window.
The former Espanyol defender departed from Atletico Madrid after his contract expired.
There was a fair bit of transfer interest in Hermoso.
Perhaps the most strongly-linked team for some time was Inter. The Nerazzurri reportedly sounded out a possible move for the Spaniard.
Inter are certainly no strangers to taking advantage of big name free transfer opportunities.
That is the route via which all of Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, and Marcus Thuram arrived at the club.
This summer along, Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski signed for Inter on free transfers.
Former Inter Target Mario Hermoso Set For Roma Move
Earlier in the summer there were links between Hermoso and Premier League clubs Aston Villa and West Ham United.
And then, in the last few weeks, Manchester United have come up as another English suitors.
And AC Milan have also reportedly made contact with Hermoso’s representatives.
Napoli and Bologna also showed interest from within Serie A.
And indeed, it will be a move to the Italian top flight for Hermoso, reports Sky.
But it will not be to any of Inter, Milan, Napoli, or Bologna.
Rather, Roma are on the verge of getting a deal over the line to sign the 29-year-old.
The Giallorossi had previously tried to sign a couple defenders in the dying days of the transfer window. These were Lens’s Kevin Danso, and Juventus’s Tiago Djalo.
But both of those deals fell through before the transfer deadline.
Therefore, Sky report, Roma have turned to Hermoso as a defender who is available even though the window has closed.
