Cape May Tech High School Hires New Boys Basketball Head Coach

Date:

Even though Cape May County Tech has been a year-round Vocational School since 1915, the High School has only been a fully operational 9th through 12th-grade educational institution since the mid-1990s.

Located in the Crest Haven Complex off Garden State Parkway Exit 11, Cape May Tech High School is rated one of the best schools in Cape May County.  The school is rated in the Top 30 Percent of New Jersey Schools with high Student Reading/Language Proficiency scores.

However, one area in which Cape May County Tech does not compare well to other high schools is interscholastic sports. Even though the school can draw on students from all over the county, many parents choose to send their athletically gifted teenagers to other schools.

Cape May Tech Hires New High School Boys Basketball Coach

After the Boys Varsity Team finished last season with a 2-20 record, Sam Picketts resigned from the position as the Boys Basketball Head Coach.  Cape Tech Athletic Director Dave Smith has recruited someone he used to compete against during his High School Basketball days to join him at the Cape May County Technical School.

Smith, a 2005 Graduate from Middle Township High School, can now call Phil Kelly a teammate. A graduate of Wildwood Catholic in 2005, Kelly has experience coaching at Cumberland County Community College and Georgian Court University along with his alma mater in North Wildwood.

The Boys Varsity Basketball team has only finished with a winning record four times over the last 25 years. But the biggest difference between High School Sports today compared to when Dave Smith played at Middle Township and Phil Kelly played at Wildwood Catholic, is the reasons why parents are choosing schools for their teenagers to attend.

School Choice Programs allow parents to send their kids to High School outside of the historic sending districts. More parents today are concerned about the academic quality of their teenagers’ High School Education, leading them to have their kids attend schools outside of the traditional school districts.

This can be part of the reason why new Boys Basketball Head Coach Phil Kelly can have a positive outlook about rebuilding the Cape Tech Basketball Program. There is only one other High School in Cape May County ranking in the Top 30 Percent of New Jersey schools, so Kelly can use this as part of his recruiting pitch to parents.

Parents should have options for where they can send their kids to attend High School and play sports. The reality is that only four South Jersey Schools make this list of the top-rated High Schools for sports in New Jersey:
