Jets name four team captains, including Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Mosley

Date:

The Jets announced four team captains for the 2024 NFL season, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker C.J. Mosley as voted by the players.

Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams and punter Thomas Morstead were also selected as captains

Rodgers, who was a captain for 12 of his 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers before coming to New York last offseason, will again have the “C” on his chest in his second year with the Jets.

Mosley will be a captain for the fifth time for Gang Green after he was the defensive captain in each of the past three seasons and 2019. (He opted out of the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.)

The 10th-year linebacker recorded 152 total tackles (81 solo) with one interception while appearing in all 17 games last season, playing 99 percent of the defense’s snaps.

“There is no human within this game that works as hard as he does and is as consistent as he is and means as much to a defense as he does,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said of Mosley.

Williams will be a team captain for the second straight season after he assumed the duties from Rodgers when the veteran quarterback’s debut season with the team ended after four plays due to a torn Achilles.

At 26, the lineman is the youngest of the team’s captains as he enters his sixth season. He is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl years and had 62 tackles (39 solo) with 11 for loss, 20 QB hits, 5.5 sacks, and an interception in 17 games in 2023. Williams played 69 percent of the team’s snaps, a career high.

“He’s a dominant force inside,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “When he’s playing at his best, he makes it easy for everybody to do their jobs, but not just that, he’s the ultimate team guy, and is very coachable.”

Morstead, punting for the Jets for the second year, will be a captain for the first time with the organization and the third time in his 15-year NFL career. He was a captain with the New Orleans Saints during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

The 38-year-old led the league in punts (99) and yards (4,831) a year ago, distinctions he and the Jets would rather he not accomplish this year. But he did lead the league with 54 punts of 50 or more yards.
