Kernel boys golf showcases depth in Marchand Cup victory over Yankton

Date:

Sep. 4—YANKTON — The Mitchell High School boys golf team’s depth was on full display on Tuesday, as the Kernels claimed the Marchand Cup once again at Fox Run Golf Course.

Mitchell won the event 17.5 to 6.5 over Yankton. It is the second year in a row that MHS has won the event outright and the fourth year in a row the Kernels have retained the cup.

After a close competition in the best ball segment, Mitchell won 5.5 points out of 6 in the two-player scramble and then dominated 9.5 to 2.5 in singles play.

In the team portion of the event, Sam Titze and Dawson Adams both won their fourball and scramble competitions for MHS, as did Tyler Christensen and Gavin Polreis claiming two points each. Brady Reiners and Jordan Meyerink scored 1 1/2 points and Carter McCormick and Marshall Widstrom and Matthew Mauszycki/Canon Moller were both winners in the scramble portion of play.

Singles winners for Mitchell included Widstrom, Reiners, Meyerink, Titze, Christensen, Polreis, Mauszycki and Moller, while Asher Dannenbring, Everett Morrison and Carter McCormick each halved their singles matches, each claiming a half point.

The Ryder Cup-style tournament is scored three different ways, with the first six holes as a four-ball best-ball, holes 7-12 were a two-man scramble and holes 13-18 were individual match play. The event is named in memory of Rob Marchand, who graduated from Yankton and coached golf in Mitchell before his death in 2014.

Some Mitchell golfers will be in action on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Parkston Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course, and Mitchell will also be playing on Friday, Sept. 13 at Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton.
