Staal, 37, spent his final season in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. In 35 games with the Flyers this past season, the 6-foot-4 defender posted one goal, five points, 31 hits, and a plus-2 rating. Overall, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native proved to be a solid depth defender and leader for the rebuilding Flyers.

Staal was one of the more notable free agents left on the market, but he has now decided to move on from his playing career and join the Rangers‘ staff. The fit should be good for Staal, as he spent the first 13 years of his NHL career with the Blueshirts.

In 1,136 career games over 17 NHL seasons split between the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, and Flyers, Staal had 53 goals, 234 points, and a plus-52 rating.
